UNA VISITA A ROMA

Roma, la ciudad de las siete colinas levantada a orillas del río Tíber, es una de las capitales europeas que concita una mayor afluencia turística. Su incuestionable importancia histórica, unida al hecho de tratarse de una de las más relevantes cunas de la civilización occidental, congrega cada año a millones de visitantes atraídos por las ruinas de su antiguo pasado y la riqueza de la gran cantidad de obras de arte que atesora. Además de todos los museos y monumentos tradicionales que se pueden visitar, pasando por taquilla, la ciudad, en sí misma, es todo un museo al aire libre. Pasear por sus calles y plazas contemplando sus edificios señeros, el arte de sus fuentes y los innumerables vestigios históricos esparcidos por todos sus rincones, es todo un regalo para la vista que transporta nuestra mente hacia tiempos pretéritos de mayor esplendor. El atractivo del Vaticano, un minúsculo estado incrustado en esta urbe, que, desde hace siglos, alberga la máxima autoridad de la Iglesia Católica, representada por el Papa como sucesor en la silla de San Pedro, es un aliciente añadido para la visita de la ciudad, especialmente para todos los católicos del mundo.

Planificar un viaje a Roma, para disfrutar plenamente de todos los alicientes que esta atractiva ciudad nos ofrece y minimizar la posibilidad de encontrarse con desagradables sorpresas, requiere tener en cuenta algunos aspectos básicos importantes, entre los que se pueden destacar los siguientes:

El Coliseo (Roma)

Alojamiento.- Como en casi todas las ciudades muy pobladas, los equipamientos y servicios de los hoteles, para una misma categoría, difieren bastante de lo que podemos estar acostumbrados a encontrar en poblaciones de tipo medio. Por esta razón, la elección de un alojamiento, bien situado, cómodo, confortable y con buenos servicios, es una de las principales prioridades. Si disponemos de un buen nivel económico, lo recomendable es elegir uno de los excelentes hoteles que se encuentran en la prestigiosa vía Vittorio Veneto, que, con toda seguridad, cumplirá, sobradamente, con todas nuestras exigencias. En caso contrario, si nuestros recursos son más limitados, podemos explorar otras opciones dentro de una nutrida oferta de alojamientos que podrían satisfacer nuestros requerimientos mínimos Eso sí, que se encuentren dentro del núcleo  central de la ciudad, que no tengan una categoría inferior a 4 estrellas y, a ser posible, que tengamos referencias fiables y directas de los mismos. 

Restaurantes.- A la hora de reponer fuerzas, lo más recomendable es elegir un buen restaurante, bien calificado y de prestigio. La diferencia del ratio calidad/precio de un buen restaurante, con respecto a los muchos establecimientos mediocres que se esparcen por toda la ciudad, es razón más que suficiente para no escatimar esfuerzos en este sentido. Otra opción podría ser la de intentar comer en una de las tradicionales “trattorías”; restaurantes donde se sirven comidas típicas italianas y tradicionales en un ambiente más informal, con precios generalmente más bajos, aunque aquí también existen notables diferencias entre los distintos locales. En cualquier caso, lo que sí hay que tener muy en cuenta, es asegurarse previamente de los precios de lo que pretendamos consumir, ya que, de lo contrario, podremos encontrarnos con sorpresas muy desagradables. Aunque no se puede generalizar, hay bastantes establecimientos sin escrúpulos cuya especialidad es precisamente la de estafar al turista, y, además, lo hacen de forma tal que no queda más recurso que el de la protesta; aunque, lamentablemente, no sirva para nada.

Visitas.- Dado que las visitas son el origen y razón de todo turista que llega a Roma, es muy conveniente realizar una planificación rigurosa de las mismas, al menos de las más importantes. En este sentido, es altamente recomendable realizar las visitas en grupos, no muy numerosos, y acompañados por un guía competente, sobre todo cuando vayamos a lugares tan concurridos como los Museos Vaticanos, Capilla Sixtina, Basílica de San Pedro, Coliseo, Foros Romanos, Catacumbas, etcétera. Las ventajas que esta modalidad ofrece son muy importantes: garantizar horarios, evitar las largas colas que se forman para conseguir los pases preceptivos y  entrar en los distintos recintos, visitar lugares solo reservados para grupos y sacar el máximo partido a la visita al disponer de una información personal y directa de lo que estamos contemplando. Las agencias de viaje pueden ofrecer, como complemento, programas de visita guiadas organizadas por operadores serios y fiables que suelen ser adecuados y a precio ajustado, aunque también se pueden contratar personalmente en destino. En cualquier caso, este es un asunto imprescindible para no perder el tiempo y la paciencia. Como orientación, el número mínimo de días para poder visitar lo más importante de Roma, incluido los obligados paseos por sus calles, y no decir solo que yo estuve allí, es de cinco o seis días completos en la ciudad.

Con relación a las visitas, cabe hacer una recomendación muy importante: Nunca contratar ninguna visita con supuestos  agentes turísticos que operan en la calle; aunque dicen actuar en representación de agencias oficiales, en una mayoría de los casos son falsos y, con muchas probabilidades, puede resultar timado. Otro asunto que se debe tener en cuenta es no caer en la trampa de aceptar fotografías con personajes ataviados como gladiadores romanos u otros sujetos vestidos para la ocasión, ya que puede encontrarse con la sorpresa de exigirle cantidades de dinero desorbitadas por ello. El cuidado con su cartera y pertenencias en general debe ser extremo, dado que el número de ladrones que operan en la ciudad, sobre todo en medios de transporte colectivo y zonas de aglomeraciones de personas, es extremadamente elevado.

Transporte.- A pesar de que la información que se suele encontrar al respecto no suele recomendar el uso del taxi, alegando que la circulación en Roma es caótica y los taxis resultan muy caros, la verdad es que esto no es así. Aunque la circulación urbana, como en casi todas las grandes ciudades, no es precisamente una virtud, lo cierto es que tampoco difiere gran cosa de la mayoría de las poblaciones de su nivel, e incluso mejor que alguna de ellas. Lo que sí es importante, para evitar sorpresas, es no parar nunca a los taxis que están circulando; acudir siempre a tomar el  taxi a una parada oficial, o solicitar el servicio directamente desde el hotel, y, en todos los casos, exigir siempre el uso del taxímetro. El metro urbano, aunque es el medio más económico, es una experiencia muy poco recomendable. La enorme afluencia de pasajeros que toma este medio, máxime a determinadas horas del día, hace que subir y bajar a los vagones, en muchos casos, sea toda una proeza, peligrosa para personas delicadas y de movilidad reducida, mayores y niños. Si se decide vivir esta experiencia, y consigue salir ileso, con todas sus pertenencias intactas, seguro que habrá tenido suerte y podrá experimentar lo cómodo que se deben encontrar las sardinas en lata. En cuanto al bus y el tranvía, el primero resulta complicado para el que no conozca bien las líneas y el segundo no tiene las paradas en los sitios más adecuados que busca el turista.

En otro orden de cosas, recuerde que, a pesar de que en las facturas se podrá encontrar con conceptos a los que puede no estar acostumbrado, tales como servicio y/o cubierto, que pueden conducir a pensar que la propina ya se la han cobrado por adelantado, lo cierto es que siempre esperarán por ella, incluso le facilitarán un impreso, en el caso de que pague con tarjeta de crédito, para que refleje hasta donde está dispuesto a llevar su generosidad. Dado que la picaresca es bastante generalizada, extreme las medidas de precaución, no pague con tarjeta donde no le ofrezca la máxima confianza, y, sobre todo, no la pierda nunca de vista. 

En cualquier caso, si todavía no conoce Roma, y tiene la intención de ir algún día, algo que se le puede recomendar, sin ninguna reserva, es la conveniencia de que tenga en cuenta estas breves y concretas observaciones. Seguro que lo agradecerá. Si es así, solo me queda desearle “buon viaggio, buon soggiorno e sicuro ritorno.”

A VISIT TO ROME

Rome, the city of seven hills raised on the banks of the Tiber River, is one of the capitals of Europe that attracts more tourists. His unquestioned historical importance, coupled with the fact it was one of the most important cradles of Western civilization, move each year millions of visitors attracted by the ruins of its ancient past and the richness of the many works of art it contains. Besides all the monuments and traditional museums that can be visited, with payment of entry, the own city, itself, is an outdoor museum. Stroll through its streets and squares contemplating its stately buildings, the art of their sources and its countless historical remains scattered in every corner, is a feast for the eyes that carries our minds to bygone days of splendor. The attractiveness of the Vatican, a tiny state embedded in this city, which, for centuries, holds the highest authority of the Catholic Church, represented by the Pope as the successor to the chair of St. Peter, is an added incentive to visit  the city, especially for all the Catholics of the world.

Plan a trip to Rome, to fully enjoy all the attractions that this city offers  and minimize the possibility of encountering unpleasant surprises, requires consideration of some important basic aspects, among which may include the following:

Accommodation.- As in all the most densely populated cities, the facilities and services of the hotels, for the same category, are quite different from what we may be accustomed to finding in populations of average type. For this reason, the choice of accommodation, well located, suitable, comfortable and with good service, is a top priority. If you have a good economic level, it is advisable to choose one of the excellent hotels that are located in the prestigious Via Vittorio Veneto, that, surely, will fill, amply, all our demands. Otherwise, if our resources are limited, we can explore other options within a large range of accommodation that could meet our minimum requirements. The most importantly is choose a hotel that is located within the heart of the city, which has not less than 4 stars category and, if it is possible, to have reliable and direct references of that establishment.

Restaurants.- At the time for the revitalization, it is best to choose a good restaurant, well qualified and prestige. The difference in quality / price ratio of a good restaurant, with respect to the many mediocre places that are scattered throughout the city, is reason enough to spare no efforts in this regard. Another option could be to try to eat at one of the traditional “trattorías”; restaurants that serving typical Italian and traditional meals in a more informal, with prices generally lower, although in these places there are also substantial differences between them. 

In any case, what we do have to keep in mind, is ensure previously of the prices the items that we pretend consuming, since, otherwise, we can find very unpleasant surprises. Although can not generalize, there are many unscrupulous establishments whose specialty is precisely the of diddle the tourist, and, besides, make it in such a way that there is no other recourse than the protest; although, unfortunately, is useless.

In any case, this is an issue essential to avoid wasting time and patience. As guidance, the minimum number of days to visit the most important of Rome, including the obligatory walk through the streets, and not to say anything else that I went through there, is five or six full days in the city.

Regarding the visits, is necessary to keep in mind a very important recommendation: Never hire any tourist visit with alleged agents operating in the street; although they claim to act on behalf of officers agencies, in most cases are false, and, with high probability, can be scammed. Another important  issue that must be considered is not to fall into the trap of accepting pictures with individuals characterized like roman gladiators or other people dressed for the occasion, as it may be surprised to demand exorbitant amounts of money per it. The care with your wallet and belongings in general must be extreme, since the number of thieves operating in the city, especially in collective transport and places of more public attendance, is extremely high.

Transport.- Even though the information that is usually found on this, not usually recommend using the taxi, claiming that the circulation in Rome is chaotic and taxis are very expensive, the truth is that it is so not. Although urban traffic, as in almost all major cities, is hardly a virtue, the truth is that neither differs much from most of the cities on your level, and  even better than some of them. What is important, to avoid surprises, is that you never take a taxi stopping those who are circulating,  go always  to the official stop for to take a taxi, or request this service directly from the hotel, and, in all cases, to require always the use of taximeter. The underground, although it is the most economical, is hardly recommendable. the huge influx of passengers that use this transport, especially at certain times of day, causes that the use of this service, in many cases, is quite a feat, delicate and dangerous for people with reduced mobility, elderly and children. If you decide to live this experience and get out unscathed, with all their belongings intact, you probably has had lucky and may envy how comfortable they must find canned pilchard. In terms of bus and tram, the first turns out to be rather complicated for no good knowledge of the lines and the second has no stops at more suitable places for the tourist.

In other matters, remember that, even though in the invoices can be found with concepts unfamiliar for you, such as service and / or covered, which can lead to think that the tip has already been charged in advance, the truth is that always are waiting for it, even provide you a form, if you pay by credit card, to reflect as far as you are willing to carry out your generosity. As the picaresque in Italy is quite widespread, extreme precautions, do not pay by card where does not offer the utmost confidence, and, above all, do not lose sight of the card.

In any case, if you still do not know Rome, and you intend to go one day, the best thing I can recommend, without reservation, is the desirability of taking into account these few specific suggestions.
