Salamanca, declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco en 1988 y Capital Europea de la Cultura en 2002, es, junto con Santiago de Compostela, una de las ciudades españolas que, por su importante patrimonio arquitectónico, atraen  a un mayor número de turistas de las más diversas procedencias. Cuenta con la universidad en activo más antigua de España que, a su vez, fue la primera en Europa que ostentó el título de Universidad.
